Vision Screening

Our Focus

I CARE is a volunteer organization founded in 1969 in Menlo Park, California with the purpose of screening preschool children to determine common childhood eye problems. The organization serves the greater Peninsula area of San Francisco. We are dedicated to win the fight to prevent vision loss in children.

We are always looking for new schools to add to our list of locations we screen!

Why Screen?

IDentify children that need vision correction

Our instrument device is lightening fast and can detect vision impairments quickly.

Importance of Vision Screening

Researchers estimate that in 2015, there were 174,000 preschool-age children in the U.S. with a visual impairment, with conditions including uncorrected refractive error amblyopia, and other eye diseases. Blindness in childhood is particularly concerning, as many disorders leading to impairment are preventable. One of the greatest concerns is that vision loss will impact a child’s quality of life, affecting financial, social, and employment opportunities over his or her lifespan.

Effective Screening completion rates

Instrument-based vision screening  can reduce screening time and achieve up to 87% vision screening completion rates compared to only 39% with chart-based screening.6

Vision disorders have no noticeable symptoms

Early detection and treatment of vision problems in childhood is crucial, as 80% of vision disorders can be prevented or cured.1

Screening Results are easy to interpret from our Portable Pediatric screening device

We are able to automatically capture an image from a non-invasive, three-foot distance using the fixation target and sounds that help keep a child’s focus. A bright touchscreen displays instant results, indicating whether measurements are in range or a complete eye exam is recommended. Results are easy to interpret and share with parents and eye care specialists.
